National Signing Day Live Thread

Welcome to the official National Signing Day Live Thread of InsideTheACC.com. Throughout the day, various contributors will give their take on the action taking place as recruits from around the country sign their National Letters of Intent.

Only time will tell how the ACC will shake out as a whole. Follow along below, and make sure to leave us comments at the bottom of the page about your favorite school. We would love to hear from you.

5:50 PM:

Things really slowed down this afternoon after Rashan Gary pledged to Michigan over Clemson, but we should still tie up some loose ends here as National Signing Day concludes.

Miami completed their class this afternoon after 4-star WR Ahmmon Richards signed with the school. Richards will be yet another player for Brad Kaaya to throw to next season, although he may be more of a depth option in the next year or two.

According to Rivals, here are the top five classes in the ACC:

1) Florida State (#2 Nationally)

2) Clemson (#5 Nationally)

3) Miami (#21 Nationally)

4) North Carolina (#23 Nationally)

5) Pittsburgh (#30 Nationally)

The obvious point to make here is that the ACC has four teams throughout the top 25 in the recruiting rankings, including two in the top 10. Florida State very nearly had the nation’s top class, but a late push by Alabama ultimately gave them the nod.

That’ll do it for our live thread. Stay tuned for more wrap up videos and analysis as college football now turns with a watchful eye towards Spring football.

1:28 PM:

The consensus No. 1 recruit in America has decided to attend Michigan over Clemson, so the bulk of the major ACC news for the day should be winding down. Don’t weep for the Tigers though as they already have a great class in tow and have some tremendous talent along the defensive line. Still, Brent Venables would have loved to have Gary line up with No. 2 overall recruit and fellow defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence who chose the Tigers this morning. Rivals.com and ESPN both currently have the Clemson class rated fourth overall and if there were any doubts that Clemson has become an elite program, I’d say they’ve been put to rest.

12:41 PM:

Managing Editor Justin Cates in the pilot’s chair now and just as soon as it was turned over to me, Florida State received yet another big commitment, this time from offensive lineman Landon Dickerson.

At 6’5″, 295 pounds Dickerson is considered one of the best lineman in the nation. Rivals.com rates him as the top guard in the country while ESPN rates him the No. 5 offensive tackle. His versatility provides incredible value for Rick Trickett’s Seminole line as Dickerson could play any of the five positions.

12:05 PM:

Florida State has gained a prospect that may seal their victory as the ACC’s top class. 6’4″ 290 lb. 4-star DT Shavar Manuel of IMG Academy has flipped from the Gators to the Seminoles, and adds another defensive line threat to an already stellar group for Jimbo Fisher.

11:40 AM:

It’s official in Louisville, they have signed 4-star QB Jawon Pass.

11:30 AM:

3-star defensive end Allen Cater (6’3″ 240 lbs.) has just announced his decision to sign with the University of North Carolina. Cater entered the day undecided, but chose the Tar Heels over Arkansas and should add immediate depth to the defensive line for Larry Fedora’s club.

11:15 AM:

6’3″ 208 lbs. 4-star WR Nate Craig-Myers, who is one of the top receiving prospects in the nation, has stuck with his commitment to the Auburn Tigers. Craig-Myers chose the Tigers after Larry Fedora and North Carolina made a strong, late push to add him to their class. This would have undoubtedly propelled UNC into the top 15 nationally in regards to their recruiting class but alas, the rich get richer in the SEC.

11:03 AM:

Looks like Miami is just about finished with their class today.

According to SB Nation’s “State of the U” the Hurricanes are only awaiting the decision of 4-star WR Ahmmon Richards out of West Palm Beach, Florida. Richards will be deciding between the ‘Canes and Alabama, although his desire to remain close to home has made Miami the favorite heading into his announcement this afternoon.

10:42 AM:

Florida State landed 4-star, 6’6″, 315 lb. OL Jauan Williams out of Archbishop Carroll in Washington D.C. Williams garnered significant interest from the Georgia Bulldogs, but ultimately stuck to his guns and signed with the Seminoles.

10:28 AM:

Despite a couple of early surprises, it has been pretty much ho-hum across the conference this morning. Pittsburgh landed 4-star LB Chase Pine moments ago, who stayed solid on his pledge to the Panthers despite heavy interest from Virginia Tech. https://twitter.com/bradhowephoto/status/694930601653174275 Of course, the big news we are all waiting on is the decision from number one overall recruit Rashan Gary. Michigan has long been the favorite, but will Clemson’s final push sway him to the Tigers? Stay tuned.

9:48 AM:

Clemson lands 3-star DB K’Von Wallace. Wallace was expected to go orange and white, but was officially undecided heading into signing day.

9:43 AM:

The trials and tribulations of Florida State continue this morning.

This won’t define the Florida State class, but it does not help either.

9:25 AM:

DT Keyshon Camp has committed to Pittsburgh. Pat Narduzzi and the class of defensive blue-chips continues, as he lands the 4-star lineman who was formerly committed to Southern Cal.

9:17 AM:

After nabbing #2 DT Dexter Lawrence, Clemson has officially captured the first surprise of the day in the ACC. 4-star CB Trayvon Mullen has committed to the Tigers after being heavily involved with Florida State and Miami among others. We were expecting big days for Clemson and Florida State, but this undoubtedly deals a pretty significant blow to the Seminoles, while bolstering the 2016 class for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers. The fireworks are not done yet for Clemson, as they made a late push for top-ranked recruit, DT Rashan Gary, who will announce his pledge this afternoon.

8:42 AM:

The rough morning continues for Virginia Tech. 3-star DE JaQuan Bailey out of Jacksonville, Florida has opted to play at Iowa State. The 6’3″ edge rusher was expected to sign with the Hokies this morning, but instead will join his brother Joshua with the Cyclones.

8:31 AM:

3-star LB Dominique Ross, a UNC-commit has officially signed with the Tar Heels. Virginia Tech made a late push this past weekend to snatch Ross away from the ‘Heels, but to no avail. He made good on his word to Larry Fedora, and has the potential to be the next great linebacker at the University of North Carolina. Additionally, 3-star defensive end Tomon Fox is sticking with the Tar Heels as well, as he signed his National Letter of Intent. The Hokies made one final charge for Fox last weekend, hoping that his relationship with high school teammate and Hokies commit, Emmanuel Belmar, could sway him to Virginia Tech. Ultimately, he kept true to his word as well, as these are a couple of early “losses” for Justin Fuente and company in his first year at the helm.

8:28 AM:

Florida State kicks off what they hope to be a huge day with the commitment of formerly undecided 4-star, Rivals 100 defensive end Brian Burns out of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Burns adds an instant difference-maker as an edge rusher, which should help the young and improving Seminoles defense tremendously.

8:27 AM:

OK, then. David Cutcliffe can go back to bed now.

8:09 AM:

We have our first flip of the day. According to ESPN sources, 4-star CB Tyler Byrd, has decommitted from Miami and has officially signed with the Tennessee Volunteers. Byrd officially rescinded his pledge to the Hurricanes late last night, but his signing with the Vols this morning makes it official. Big early loss for Mark Richt and Miami in his first National Signing Day with the school.

Additionally, 3-star WR Aaron Mathews has signed with Pittsburgh, just two days after flipping from Penn State. It’s official for Pat Narduzzi and the Panthers.

8:00 AM:

National Signing Day has officially been underway for about an hour and no surprises as of yet. Many teams across the ACC have begun to receive players’ National Letters of Intent from guys that have been solid to their respective programs for quite some time. This should be a fun day, we’ll keep you posted.
